Oh man. I haven't written in here for quite some time. I'm so neglectful. :< Finished the Persephone painting that had been in the works for a little while, which I am very proud of for all its flaws and failings (surprisingly few for something of mine!).

Next time I'm working with Alizarin crimson for a more pomegranate shade. Acrylic on heavy particle board. Ignore the shitty flash that wiped out detailed shading. :/

Yeah, so i can't actually afford that painting class i was raving about after all. i dropped the only other class i had (couldn't afford books), and that in turn gave UMA the excuse to cut all my funding except a Pell Grant. the Grant itself was cut in half. so AFTER the Grant went in, i still owe them $583. and i SO don't have that kind of money and i know i won't be able to make enough commissions by TOMORROW to pay it, i'm gonna have to drop it.

i'm really really unhappy about this. i mean, i can get work done of my own volition, that's not the problem. i lose that setting. i lose working with a bunch of other art students, i lose that feedback and inspiration. and i lose critiques. i mean my friends on y! gal have been really good about helping me with my Thriving Ivy piece, but it's still not the same.

the plus sides here tho are: i have more time to collect/finish commissions and portfolio work of my own choosing, and that extra day could probably get me another shift at work. i'd love to be able to afford my own studio space (shared of course).

oh my god, what the hell have i gotten into? starting my Painting II class today. writing this on my lunch break actually, because i'm too nervous to eat. probably should tho, considering the amount of coffee i've consumed in the last two and a half hours.

on the one hand, i'm terribly grateful to have the class. it's kicking my ass into gear to get more work done, more than the scribbles and junk i've been doing on my own on the computer. i have a large canvas back at my apartment with a sketch already worked on it, but i haven't touched it with a paintbrush yet, and it's just been sitting there since September. i should be ashamed. this class is a 300-level, my first, and i'm so done for with the amount of work we have to do for it. first project alone, we have to have two paintings done for the crit in 3 WEEKS. that's this class for planning/brainstorming/research, and then the next two classes for actual painting. thank god they're 6-hours straight and that i've only got one other class this semester. it would've blown really hard to try and juggle three other 200-level courses on top of Painting II. i don't know how other people do it.

KELSEY DOES 6 CLASSES A SEMESTER. PLUS senior project. i'd collapse from it all. i have no idea how she manages it. i'm severely impressed.

posting up a piece i've been working on for almost a week now. still very much WIP but i'm getting less angry with it lately. i learned to step back from it when i start getting pissed, then going back once i haven't looked at it for half a day.

working through it with the help of friends and fellow artists on Y!gallery. this is the only post i'll be making here about it before it's completely finished. i hate repeating myself excessively.

it's going to be a long, frustrating, and awesome semester.

A more painterly sketch of Syl again. I wanted to practice a different way to color, and I enjoyed it. It makes me think and handle it in a different way than usual, and I need to break out of my comfort zone more often. Photoshop. needs more practice, but i love his colors.

One of my biggest pet peeves as an artist (and I've been told this shouldn't be one) is the fact that I can't sit down and finish something in one go. Except for things I shouldn't be working on. Case in point: the bookmark commission. I pushed myself for an hour trying to digitally ink those (not supposed to be digitally inked but I screwed up a lot of things and blahblahblahsuck) and it just wasn't happening. It wasn't clean enough, it wasn't tight enough, too thick, you know how it goes. So I put it aside and took a bit of time to play around with an idea that was bouncing around in my head and had been for a while.

I want to do sticker sets. Like sets of three or four stickers, with my own characters (and maybe fan characters later) and bits of lyrics. Each sticker will have a part of a lyric line or stanza and when put together it makes the whole lyric. So this was a demo. And I completed the bastard from start to finish in about 3 hours, including a break for homemade chicken soup (i love you, Davyn! best roommate EVAR!).

NOW WHY CAN'T I DO THIS WITH COMMISSION WORK? *fail* I'll eventually finish the other two for this set, probably in the same way I finished this. Now excuse me while I go attempt that inking again.

I had a little time to kill before my sister got off the PC (I was at home and without my commission work to work on, stupid me), so I screwed around with index cards and markers, and this was the outcome:

It's just a thing of a boy with magenta hair I drew out straight in marker, cut out and stuck to another index card as a background. I'm quite pleased with this effect. I'm hoping to get some decent painting ideas from doing these. I used to sketch out in pen on index cards a lot at my old art school. I've had a couple successful paintings come out of these, so it's not all a waste of time like I think some days haha!

Once I get a better design and a tighter execution down, I'll be offering these as a cheapo headshot/bust commission option. This was fun and only took about 30-45 minutes to do, but then again that was without a lot of thought and just screwing around.

I needed a break, and this provided it.

Just got back from Staples, looking at dimensions and stuff for sticker paper. I want to do little sticker sets with lyrics on them, for my Etsy shop. Listened to a ton of music on the way home and now my mind's going a bajillion miles a minute. once i get them done, i'll be offering stickers under my commission selection! yay! I just need to get through these couple current commissions. MUST NOT GET DISTRACTED.

my head hurts a little when there's too much stuff in it. I think i'll go line my travel plug box now.

Payment in full is now due before work is started. I have been burned one too many times by flakey clients. If the bill is $100 or more, only 50% will be due, then the rest at the completion of the piece (before the print is sent out).
A refund of 75% will be given at or before the completion of the inked stage. Once the coloring starts, however, no refund will be given, as too much time has been invested at this point.
Edits are free up to 3. Any more and I charge $5 per edit. I do my best to please my customers, but edits take extra time (obviously) and after a time I need to start being reimbursed for it. Thank you for your understanding.
I have no tolerance for harassment or abuse from a client. If I am harassed or abused in any way, I reserve the right to cancel the commission with no refund. (You'd have to be a complete asshole to make me do this however.)

I've been into art seriously since about middle of high school. I'm now currently a student at the University of Maine at Augusta, working on a BA in Fine Arts. here i go, working on my final project for 2-D Design. it's a collage project and i'm so excited over this i may end up neglecting the rest of my projects. a no-no, but meh.

my idea is working with Hades & Persephone, from Greek mythology. if you don't know who they are, then shame on you! overlooking the fact that Persephone is indeed Hades' niece (i suppose you need to keep it in the family when you're all gods..), i love these two to death. they're like my favorite pair in all the mythology i know of, even Izanami and Izanagi.

i'm already bugging Chien over animal skull photos and i'm trying to pick Draco's brain for more info or ideas. i've got a (messed up) list of things already in my sketchbook.

mandatory opening post

two weeks til the semester's over! yay! then i'll just have work to worry about (oh yeah and my Anthropology class if i get into it), and hopefully i'll have more time to work on my own pieces. the majority of this semester has been focusing on class work, which aren't always projects that i'd like to do. once i get my camera straightened out again, i'll have to take photos of some of those (the few that i ended up liking) and posting them up here.

i always have trouble starting a new blog, especially one like this. i feel as tho i need to catch people up on what i've done up until now, but there's so much crap i don't quite feel up to dumping everything here. and it seems i'll need to make thumbnails or preview images for some things. stupid blog won't stretch out.

oh and get used to me not capitalizing "i"s, or using capitals at all, aside from proper names and such. i'm just too lazy for it. so sorry.
